Kumera Kitchen
Serving delicious, organic meals since 2005
The Kumera Community Kitchen had a great year in 2009. We mentored a group of 15+ volunteers at the Uniting Church Merewether to establish a weekly community kitchen at the Church. The volunteer group has been developing cooking skills, organisational skills and we have successfully established the community kitchen over the last 8 months. We finished up the year with Christmas and New Year dinners attended by 70+ people who enjoyed the delicious food and guitar music played by Reverend John and musician 'Shock.'
Regular Community Kitchen volunteer Elenore, has taken on the role of Co-coordinator in 2010, with ongoing support from the Kumera Kitchen crew.
The Kumera Kitchen also catered or ran community kitchens at a number of events and festivals:
November - Lovelorn Living Theatre - High and Dry Festival, NSW.
China Club Arts Hub, This Is Not Art Festival, Newcastle, October
Climate Camp, Helensburgh NSW, October
Save Lake Cowal Fundraiser at The Lass, Newcastle, June
Spring Banquet Fundraiser, Croatia Club, Newcastle, May
Illustrations Of Freedom Exhibition, Newcastle and Sydney, March/April
Resurgence Queer Conference, Sydney, February
Our dream for 2010 is to secure a grant to establish a permanent Community Kitchen. We have been offered an amazing shop front space, we just need the funds to fit it out with a commercial kitchen. From this space we will run a variety of programs such as cooking and permaculture workshops, a weekly community meal and a cafe serving local and organic foods and groceries. We will continue to support groups wanting to establish community kitchens and permaculture gardens and to cater like-minded events and festivals.
